Infinity Pool Construction — Bukit Bandaraya, Bangsar

Infinity pool construction at Bukit Bandaraya, Bangsar with KL skyline views

The Challenge

The owner of a newly renovated bungalow perched on the slopes of Bukit Bandaraya — one of Bangsar's most exclusive enclaves — wanted an infinity-edge pool that would take full advantage of the property's commanding views over the Kuala Lumpur skyline. The vision was bold: a 15-metre pool with a vanishing edge that would appear to merge seamlessly with the city below.

The primary engineering challenge was the terrain itself. The build site had a natural gradient of approximately 18 degrees, with underlying rock formations at varying depths. Standard excavation methods would not work — the pool shell needed to be engineered to accommodate the uneven bedrock while maintaining perfect level across the infinity edge. Additionally, the property's hillside location meant that all heavy machinery access was limited to a narrow 3.5-metre driveway, requiring careful logistics planning for concrete trucks and crane access.

Drainage was another critical concern. Bukit Bandaraya receives heavy rainfall during the monsoon, and water runoff from the hillside above the property needed to be diverted around the pool structure to prevent hydrostatic pressure buildup beneath the shell.

Our Solution

We assembled a specialist team comprising our senior pool engineers, a geotechnical consultant, and a structural engineer experienced in hillside construction. The project began with a detailed site survey including bore-hole testing at four locations to map the bedrock profile beneath the proposed pool footprint.

Based on the survey data, we designed a reinforced concrete shell with variable wall thickness — ranging from 250mm on the uphill side to 400mm at the infinity edge where hydrostatic forces would be greatest. Steel reinforcement was specified at 16mm bars at 150mm centres in both directions, exceeding standard pool construction specifications. The entire shell was poured in a single continuous pour using a pump truck to ensure a monolithic, leak-proof structure.

The infinity edge itself required a separate catch basin (balance tank) built below the vanishing edge, with a capacity of 3,500 litres to handle water displacement during use. We installed dual return pumps to recirculate water from the catch basin back into the main pool, ensuring the weir effect remained consistent and visually stunning at all times. A custom stainless steel weir plate was fabricated to achieve a perfectly uniform water flow across the full 15-metre edge.

For the finishing, the client selected a dark charcoal pebble-finish interior to create a mirror-like reflection of the sky. The pool deck was clad in imported Bali natural stone with a honed, non-slip finish. We installed a full-colour LED lighting system — 12 underwater fixtures and 8 perimeter deck lights — all controllable via a smartphone app, allowing the pool to transform into a dramatic visual centrepiece after dark.

The Result

The completed pool is a stunning 15-metre infinity edge that appears to dissolve into the KL skyline from the property's entertaining terrace. The dark pebble finish creates a deep, reflective surface during the day and a dramatic lit canvas at night. The infinity edge weir produces a gentle, consistent curtain of water that is both visually mesmerising and acoustically soothing.

The project was completed on schedule in 14 weeks despite two weeks of monsoon rain delays — we built in buffer time during the planning phase specifically for this. The pool was subsequently featured in a Malaysian interior design magazine as an example of seamless indoor-outdoor living, and the architect has since referred two additional clients to us for similar projects in the Bangsar and Kenny Hills area.

"The pool is the crown jewel of our home. Every evening when the lights come on and the water flows over the edge with the city lights behind it — it takes our breath away. The Ultra Pool Care team were meticulous throughout and the engineering on this hillside was impressive. Worth every ringgit."
